Guns Don’t Kill People

Now, everybody get the mandatory chuckle out of your system, since that’s been the common reaction to the famous, and factual, claim by Charleton Heston. The end to that sentence “people do”, is the important part, and it’s often ignored as much of the nation goes into a tizzy whenever the word “gun” is mentioned. All Mr. Heston was saying is that a gun, when properly used and stored, and possessed by law-abiding citizens, will never take an innocent life. Strange that we somehow find that statement outdated and odd, instead wishing to place the blame for gun violence on firearms, firearm owners, and firearm makers.

How guns have become yet another area of life where the individual bears no responsibility for his actions is a mystery to me. No gun in the history of man has ever sprouted legs, walked to the nearest school, and started shooting up kids. Every round ever fired out of the barrel of a gun has had a human pointing it, and pulling the trigger (or dropping it, in the case of some older revolvers). Yet, whenever a couple of disgruntled teenagers shoot up a classroom, or Islamic nuts start sniping in DC, the first cry is not for the blood of the criminals, not for justice, but for a tighter restriction on the sale and possession of guns.

This reasoning flies in the face of established fact. John Lott, in his book More Guns, Less Crime clearly showed that in states with less restrictive laws governing the sale and possession of firearms, the violent crime rate is much lower than in gun control areas like Washington DC and Los Angeles. States that repeal their restrictions almost immediately benefit from having a well armed citizenry, capable of defending itself against violent criminals when the police are off busting someone for smoking a joint, or, even worse, a cigarette.

As cliche as it may seem, the only ones punished by gun regulations are law abiding citizens. Criminals, especially violent criminals, are not deterred from getting a gun outside the boundaries and checks of the law. Since they are often longtime members of the criminal world, it is no matter for them to easily acquire a gun for a couple of hundred dollars, or in exchange for drugs. They have better distributors than the peaceful citizens, and there’s always a market for business.

So, when restrictions are placed on non-criminals, the only result is an immediate disproportionate distribution of firepower, and that goes a long way toward advancing the criminal cause. A thug is far less likely to attack you if he knows that there’s a good chance that you might be packing yourself. Criminals don’t generally survive by placing themselves in danger, which is why you hear about so many crimes being committed against weak targets, like the elderly and women. Some grandma hitting you with her purse is a heck of a lot less dangerous than a big, burly ex-lineman, and that ex-linemen is even more dangerous to the criminal if he has a .45 Glock at his side.
