Hillary Clinton (d)
Cosponsored legislation to reinstate for 10 years the assault weapons ban.
Barack Obama (d)
Wants tighter background checks on gun buyers, making gun locks mandatory, and holding parents criminally responsible for children who injure someone with a gun found at home. Supports reinstating assault weapons ban.
John Edwards (D)
Has said protecting gun owner rights and working to stop gun crimes can both be achieved. Opposes protecting gun makers from lawsuits holding them liable for gun violence. Supports reinstating assault weapons ban.
Rudy Giuliani (R)
Has been backing off past support for strong national gun control laws, saying what worked in New York City may not work elsewhere, especially in rural areas. Spokesman’s statement on assault weapons ban: “The best way to deal with gun crime is to prosecute the criminals and enforce the laws already on the books.”
Mike Huckabee (R)
Said he supports Second Amendment and opposes laws that would restrict gun ownership for law-abiding citizens. Opposes reinstating assault weapons ban. Opposes expansion of Brady Bill or ban on any type of ammunition.
John McCain (R)
Opposes gun control, calling it “a proven failure in fighting crime.” Opposes waiting periods to buy firearms. Has supported legislation requiring gun makers to include trigger locks with their products. Opposes reinstating assault weapons ban.
Ron Paul (R)
Says Second Amendment forbids government from infringing upon right to own weapons. Would seek to repeal all federal gun control legislation. Opposes reinstating assault weapons ban.
Mitt Romney (R)
Calls Second Amendment “one of the most basic and undamental rights of every American.” Says Washington needs to distinguish between lawabiding gun owners and criminals who use guns. Opposes reinstating assault weapons ban but would consider regulation of weapons of “unusual lethality or power.”
Fred Thompson (R)
Says gun control doesn’t reduce crime and prevents law-abiding citizens from defending themselves. Voted against requiring background checks at gun shows. Voted to kill amendment to make it illegal for gun dealers to sell handguns without providing trigger locks. Opposes reinstating assault weapons ban.
