Another Gun Control Failure
A recent study entitled “Gun Laws and Sudden Death: Did the Australian Firearms Legislation of 1996 Make a Difference?†published in the British Journal of Criminology examines the history of gun control laws enacted in Australia. These laws include a complete ban on pump action shotguns, semi-automatic shotguns, and semi-automatic rifles. Australia also implemented a massive government sponsored Gun Buyback Program. That program has spent $500 million collecting 640,000 arbitrarily banned firearms.
The authors cited data from the Australian Bureau of Statistics and Australian Institute of Criminology (AIC) to reach their conclusions that the gun law reforms have had no effect whatsoever on murder or suicide rates when a firearm is used. It is true that those rates have declined, but there was an established historical decline occurring before these laws were passed. They did nothing to increase the rate of that decline and have been expensively ineffective.

I live in Australia, and I find it quite insulting that you refer to our gun control as a failure?????????????? Please clarify more precisely where it has been a failure,and I will endeavour to answer you with some facts.
Already proven. Gun control has failed everywhere its been tried. Examples are all over the net.
its a failure because
we havent had a mass killing for 10 yrs
our murder rate has gone down
gun ownership has risen
secure storage has stopped theft of arms
best they can drag out of the stats is although suicide by guns is down, it can be tied to the total number that is falling as well
its a failure because nra has nothing to use for their own political fight in the u.s
what they fail to take into account is that aus never had gun carry or generally available pistols
aussie stats were never going to help them
especially when u.s murder rate is 4.6 times higher than ours per capita
It has now been 12 months since gun owners in Australia were forced by new law to surrender 640,381 personal firearms to be destroyed by their own government, a program costing Australia taxpayers more than $500 million dollars. The first year results are now in:
Australia-wide, homicides are up 3.2 percent
Australia-wide, assaults are up 8.6 percent
Australia-wide, armed robberies are up 44 percent (yes, 44 percent)!
In the state of Victoria alone, homicides with firearms are now up 300 percent. Note that while the law-abiding citizens turned them in, the criminals did not, and criminals still possess their guns!
It will never happen here? I bet the Aussies said that too!
