Reuters claims recent killings ‘re-ignited’ the gun control debate
There’s really no case that the media doesn’t slant left on some issues — even “What Liberal Media?†author Eric Alterman concedes it — but this Reuters story is simply absurd. It puports to cover a “debate†but only succeeds in going through a list of bad arguments for gun control.
The NRA’s only comment in the article is the slogan “guns don’t kill people, people do.†Meanwhile, the other side gets a huge list of statistics about recent killings, how violence is bigger in America than elsewhere and how many guns those evil, backward U.S. right-winger hillbillies own.
It doesn’t mention the fact that the murder gap between the U.S. and Europe started before they had different gun control laws. It doesn’t detail the research indicating that, at best, gun control can’t be shows to work and, at worst, gun control actually increases crime. It doesn’t seem to notice that, while the ranks of gun owners are “swelling by several million every year,†violent crime has dropped precipitously since 1993.
Meanwhile, the pro-gun types are a “lobby;†the anti-gunners are “advocates.â€
National Review has a blog post here alleging the article relies on six-year-old numbers.
